GORANKA SLAVUJEVIC

AUSTRALIA

Sponsored by: District 9690

Country of Citizenship – Australia

Language Proficiency – English, Serbian

Undergraduate Degree – Bachelor of Commerce (Liberal Studies) (Honours)

Areas of special interest – Security implications of climate change, conflict resolution/cooperative mechanisms within environmental management programs, reconciliation after violent conflict.

Background to RWPF Award – At the time I applied for the peace fellowship I was working at Singapore Airlines as a Marketing Executive and running a charity, Triumphant International, which I co-founded with several friends. In late 2006, on my first trip back to my home town since fleeing due to a civil war in 1992 I made the choice to become a peace builder. I saw the damage the war inflicted on a community I love and woke up to who I can be for the world in the face of the existence of such wars and violence in the world. I saw peace building and global leadership as incredible opportunities for me to express my heart’s wish to make a difference and contribute in a way that is inspiring, fulfilling and meaningful to me. A friend told me about the RWPF during one of our many conversations about peace and I decided to apply.

What are you going to do with your RWPF? My intention is to be a world-class specialist in my field, namely the security implications of climate change and development of cooperative/conflict resolution mechanisms within environmental management programs. After completing my Masters in December 2010, I would like to work in this field for several months, spend some time travelling and late in 2011 commence doctoral studies at a European university (Bradford University is my first preference). I am currently looking for funding opportunities for my doctoral work.

Several of the past and present Peace Fellows keep blogs. We will put links to any that we know about, on Fellows' individual web pages. Please let us know of any we have missed. Thank you.
