NEW HOST AREA COORDINATOR

We are delighted to report that Chris Bown, past President of the Rotary Club of Haworth and Worth Valley, has been formally appointed to be the next Host Area Cordinator for the Rotary Peace Programme at the University of Bradford. Chris will serve from July 2012 to June 2015; she and Dick Hazlehurst will work closely together during the months leading up to the handover.

2011 SEMINAR

It seems to have been generally acknowledged that the 2011 Rotary Peace Seminar in Bradford was the best yet. Class IX gave excellent presentations, as did our two guest speakers, Mark Segal and Chris Cushing. We had Rotarians from 23 of the 29 districts in RIBI, plus visitors from Netherlands, Sweden, USA and Japan. In all, some 250 people attended the Seminar, with 133 at the Dinner on the evening before.

Several people asked for a copy of the PowerPoint presentation "Where Are They Now?" which we ran in the breaks. Our original intention was to make it freely available via this website, but it has occurred to us that some of the alumni shown in the presentation may, because of the nature of their work, not be happy for their whereabouts to be freely available on the internet. Instead, therefore, you are invited to email us at rotary@bradford.ac.uk to request a personal copy of the slides. Feel free to show them at Rotary and other appropriate functions, but please respect the confidentiality of the people shown and do not put the information in a publicly available setting. Thank you.

Some people also did not receive a copy of the story which Juliana discussed in her presentation, "Emmanuel's Story". The Word document can be downloaded here.

In all the excitement at the end of the day, I failed completely to give the "plug" which I had promised to the organisers, for the second Oxford Peace Conference to be held on 28th April next year. The Word document about that can be downloaded here.

FUTURE HOSTING AND SPEAKING ARRANGEMENTS

In recent years, there have been ever more requests for Peace Fellows to speak at ordinary Rotary club meetings. In fairness to the Fellows, whose first responsibility must be their academic studies, this is not a good use of their time, and so we will no longer be asking Fellows to accept speaking engagements at ‘ordinary’ Rotary meetings which would involve a lot of travelling time to give brief talks to comparatively small audiences. Instead, we will be concentrating on district-level engagements, or at least on engagements involving groups of clubs.

To this end, we have invited districts in RIBI to “Adopt a Peace Fellow”. There are only ten or so Fellows each year so, if every district takes up the idea, it will become roughly a three-yearly cycle.

Sixteen districts asked to be involved in this initial experiment so we have had to carry five of those forward to next year. We hope that the districts which do have their “own” Peace Fellow will invite Rotarians from neighbouring districts to any events they hold. We will continue to try to find speakers for district conferences and similar events, but please do not ask for speakers for ordinary club meetings.

We must also remind you that there are no funds to cover Fellows’ travel and associated expenses for speaking engagements. We ask districts to accept responsibility for costs and for Health and Safety, including arranging and paying for transport in each direction, meals and overnight accommodation if appropriate (which may be in a Rotarian’s home).

This year’s districts are shown in green on the map, with the districts carried forward in red:

Several of the past and present Peace Fellows keep blogs. We will put links to any that we know about, on Fellows' individual web pages. Please let us know of any we have missed. Thank you.
